Trends and applications of google earth engine in remote sensing and earth science research: a bibliometric analysis using scopus database

Abstract Since its official establishment in 2010, Google Earth Engine (GEE) has developed rapidly and played a significant role the global remote sensing community. A bibliometric analysis was conducted on 1995 peer-reviewed articles related to GEE, indexed Scopus database up December 2022 investigate trends main applications. Our findings are as follows: (1) The number of GEE-related increased rapidly, with nearly 85% them published last three years; (2) top domains where GEE been extensively applied earth planetary sciences, environmental science, agricultural biological sciences. majority were authored by scholars from China US, accounting for 58% total, US having largest impact community, contributing over 50% total citations; (3) Remote Sensing highest (26.82%), whereas Environment received citations (30.40%); (4) applications covered broad range topics, focus land applications, water resource climate change, crop mapping; (5) Landsat imagery most popular widely used dataset; (6) Random forest, decision trees, support vector machines commonly machine learning algorithms GEE. Although few limitations, this type should be regularly observe development field regular basis, publications is expected continue increase strongly coming years.
